Where Most SKOs Fall Short

Not every SKO shows up in pipeline, deal size or win rates the next quarter. When it doesn't, it's usually one of four strategic gaps.

1. Objectives That Are Too Broad to Execute — One or two clear priorities is what teams can actually absorb from a single event. Five or six objectives sound ambitious on stage and get forgotten by week two.

2. Content Built for One Role — Most SKO agendas are built around AEs. Customer Success, BDRs and technical sales sit through sessions that weren't built for how they actually work, so they check out.

3. Managers Left Out Until the Event — If managers hear new priorities for the first time on stage, they can't coach to them. Managers need to be prepared before the event, not just present at it.

4. No Plan for the Week After — Most of what's said at SKO is forgotten within days. Without a structured reinforcement plan, the kickoff is a moment. With one, it's the start of a system.

Why Do Sales Kickoffs Fail to Drive Revenue?

Sales Kickoffs fail because they're built around motivation, not execution. Team-building and inspirational content don't translate into revenue without defined priorities, role-specific relevance and a reinforcement plan after the event. Without that plan, teams revert to old habits, and pipeline health, deal size and win rates show no measurable change by the next quarter.

What Should Leaders Include in a Sales Kickoff Plan?

A strong SKO plan needs four things: a small number of specific, measurable priorities tied to revenue goals; content built for every go-to-market role, not just AEs; a manager enablement plan that runs before and after the event; and a reinforcement system to sustain new behaviors once the event ends.

How Can We Incorporate AI into Our Sales Kickoff?

The Revenue Kickoff is an optimal time to align your team around AI adoption and excellence. The preparation before your event is where you can have the most impact. Diagnose current workflow breakdowns, assess governance structures, and develop SKO programming to support clear communication of best practices and integrated workflows to boost adoption and performance. Build manager reinforcement workflows to take it from event demo to daily execution. Read our guide on building a Sales Kickoff agenda that supports AI objectives.

How to Create a Sales Kickoff Agenda?

Start with your company's revenue objectives for the year and what your teams need to execute differently to hit them. Narrow the agenda to one or two specific priorities, not five or six, and build in manager preparation before the event so they're ready to reinforce those priorities once it's over. Cut anything that doesn't map to a specific execution outcome or a reinforcement plan. Check out our guide to choosing the right priority for your sales kickoff agenda.
